Children's Dentistry

Just like you, your child's mouth needs proper care to keep it healthy and happy. However, your child's needs are different than your own. While they should be brushing and flossing every day, and should have professional cleanings and exams at least twice a year, their specific needs are different from yours. Your child's mouth is continually growing and developing, and continues to do so well into their teen years. At Macadam Dental, we can provide your child with the professional oral care they need. We understand, however, that the dentist can be a scary place. This is why we have designed our office with your child's comfort in mind. We strive to provide them the best possible care in a warm, stress-free environment. Our goal is to help your child maintain a healthy mouth that will last a lifetime.

Cleanings and Exams

Just like you, your child should have regular cleanings and exams. It is recommended that they have these done every six months. During a dental cleaning, we scrape plaque (a sticky film that accumulates naturally on the teeth), tartar (hardened plaque), bacteria, and other debris from the surfaces of your child's teeth. We also clean between them and around the gums. We also polish your child's teeth to a beautiful finish.

Once your child's cleaning is complete, we perform a thorough oral exam. We check the condition of their teeth, looking for signs of tooth decay and cavities. We look at their gum tissue to check for signs of any infection. We will also assess the alignment of their jaw. When we are finished looking at their teeth, we will have a discussion with your child (and you, if your child is younger), and provide them with tips on how to improve their at-home oral care. We will also give them (and you) time to ask any questions.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a naturally occurring element in tooth enamel. It is lost every day through a process known as demineralization. It can also be replaced, which is done through treated water, certain foods, and fluoridated oral care products. Fluoride is essential for protecting the teeth against bacterial acid attacks. Your child is particularly susceptible to cavities in the younger years, when brushing and flossing are not always done properly. And, your child may not be getting sufficient fluoride to help protect their teeth. We provide simple, pain-free fluoride treatments to help aid in the fight against cavities. We simply apply a fluoride gel to your child's teeth, and the fluoride absorbs into the enamel. It also collects at the gum line, which helps to protect vulnerable new teeth as they erupt.

Sealants are another simple, pain-free treatment that help to protect teeth from cavities. Sealants are designed to cover the deep grooves and crevices that are found on the chewing surfaces of your child's molars, where the toothbrush may not reach. An acidic gel is used to create a rough texture, which helps the sealant material to better adhere to the tooth. After the gel is washed away, the target teeth are dried and the sealant material painted on. Finally, it is cured (dried) with a specialized light. Sealants not only keep food and bacteria from becoming lodged in hard to reach places, they also help to make your child's molars easier to clean.

Making Your Child's Dental Visits Easier

If you are nervous about your dental visits, your child will most likely pick up on your anxieties. In turn, they will become anxious about their visits as well. By setting a positive example, avoiding scary words, and teaching your child that the dentist's office is a positive place, you can help to make your child's visits pleasant ones. It is also important that you work with your child at home to help them maintain their oral care habits. Together, we can ensure the health of your child's mouth.

Giving your child the tools they need now will help to ensure that they are able to maintain a healthy mouth for a lifetime. For more information, or to schedule your child's appointment, call Macadam Dental today.
