Object Caught in Teeth

If something becomes lodged between your teeth, gently use dental floss to try to remove it. Never use metal, plastic, or any sharp object, as this can damage your teeth and gums. If you can’t dislodge the item with floss, call us right away—your trusted Portland Emergency Dentist is here to help.

Broken, Chipped, or Fractured Tooth

If your tooth chips, cracks, or breaks, contact our office immediately. Prompt care is essential to prevent further damage or complications. In many cases, we can repair the tooth the same day. Our team is equipped to handle everything from small chips to more significant fractures, restoring your smile quickly and effectively.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth is knocked out, locate it as quickly as possible and handle it only by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root. Place the tooth in a clean container with milk to keep it moist. Then, call our office immediately—acting fast greatly increases the chance of saving the tooth. Note: This applies only to permanent teeth. Baby teeth cannot be re-implanted.

Toothache

Toothaches often present as sharp, persistent pain that may not respond well to over-the-counter pain relievers. Avoid placing aspirin or topical pain medication directly on the affected area, as this can harm the surrounding tissues.

The best step is to call our office promptly for an evaluation so we can determine the cause of the pain and recommend the right treatment.

Avoiding Injury

Many dental emergencies can be prevented with a few simple precautions. For example, be mindful when eating hard foods such as candies or popcorn, which can crack or chip teeth. If you or your child plays contact sports, wearing a mouthguard is essential for protecting your smile. We can even create a custom-fitted mouthguard for maximum comfort and protection.

In addition, maintaining good oral hygiene—brushing, flossing, and visiting our office regularly—can help prevent toothaches and other dental problems before they start.
