Anxiety Reducing Medication
For patients with higher levels of dental anxiety, we may prescribe oral medication such as Halcion or Valium to be taken about an hour before your procedure.
These medications create a deeper state of relaxation that lasts longer than nitrous oxide, helping you remain calm and comfortable throughout your visit.
Because the effects take time to wear off, you’ll need a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from the appointment. We also recommend taking the rest of the day off to rest, recover, and allow the medication to fully leave your system.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide — often called “laughing gas” — is one of the most common and safest dental sedatives. Delivered through a small mask placed over your nose, it’s combined with oxygen and gently inhaled during your treatment.
The gas creates a calm, relaxed feeling; some patients simply feel at ease, while others experience a pleasant, light tingling sensation.
Once your procedure is complete, you’ll breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the nitrous oxide from your system. The effects wear off quickly, so you’ll be able to safely drive yourself home afterward.
Dental Phobia
Dental phobia and anxiety are very real — and for some people, they can be truly debilitating.
At Macadam Dental, our caring team is committed not only to keeping your mouth healthy but also to ensuring you feel comfortable, safe, and relaxed during every visit. We never want fear to stand between you and the care you need, which is why we offer a range of options designed to help you feel at ease before, during, and after your appointment.
IV Sedation
For patients who need a deeper level of relaxation, we offer IV sedation provided by a highly qualified mobile anesthesiologist. The sedative is administered directly into a vein, allowing it to take effect quickly—just before your procedure—right here in the comfort of our office.
Your anesthesiologist will remain with you for the entire appointment, closely monitoring your comfort and safety from start to finish. Most patients remember little or nothing about the procedure, making it an excellent option for those with significant dental anxiety or for longer, more complex treatments.
Because the effects of IV sedation can linger, you will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment.
Trained Therapy Dogs
We have three wonderful therapy dogs ready to help ease your dental anxiety. Upon request, one (or more!) of our furry friends can join you during your appointment. They can sit quietly by your side or even rest gently on your lap or torso, offering the comfort of a “live weighted blanket” experience. Their calming presence can make your visit feel less stressful, more relaxing, and maybe even a little more joyful.
